Description
Author: Petar Angelov
The book examines the various and often unpredictable manifestations of fear and the reasons for their appearance in medieval Bulgaria. It turns out that during the epoch in question man could experience anxiety and fear of everything that surrounded him from the heavenly and earthly world – starting with the pagan gods, Jesus Christ and the Last Judgment, the devil, demons and witches, pass through the horrors of natural disasters, climatic disasters, epidemics, famine and foreign invasions and comes to the fear of the unknown land, the wild beasts and man to you – be it a compatriot or a foreigner, master or slave, local or alien, pagan or Christian, righteous or heretic. The feeling of fear has often remained invulnerable to any moral suggestions or emotional appeals to be overcome in the name of higher goals. The analyzed sources clearly show that the medieval Bulgarian tried to turn fear into something predictable and expected, which would allow him to overcome it more easily if he was not able to overcome it completely.
