Prof. D.Sc. Petar Dimitrov Angelov is a long-time lecturer at the Faculty of History of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” and Plovdiv University “Paisii Hilendarski”. He is the author of a number of studies, articles and textbooks, as well as the monographs Bulgaria and the Bulgarians in the Perceptions of the Byzantines, Medieval Bulgarian Diplomacy, Foreign Peoples in the Perceptions of the Medieval Bulgarian, and Rumours in Medieval Bulgaria.
The book chronologically traces the most important historical events and figures of the Bulgarian Middle Ages. The main spheres of activity of the society of the time – politics, diplomacy, agriculture, institutions, ideological thought, cultural and national development – are also thematically examined. Special attention is paid to foreign and domestic sources for medieval Bulgarian history. The trouble-filled fate of the Bulgarian population in the Macedonian lands in the period of the 10th-14th centuries is explored. Also included are texts that reflect the author’s recent research on the problem of the nature of the mutual perceptions developed between the Bulgarians and some of the foreign ethnic groups inhabiting the territory of medieval Bulgaria.
The second edition is supplemented with the latest research on the subject included in the bibliography, as well as a coloured appendix with maps illustrating the important stages of our historical development.
