The book: This is the third title in the Journey through the Middle Ages series, which seeks to show a more authentic view of the Middle Ages – a time filled with dramatic events and conflicts, with worthy and not so worthy knights, with bright minds and retrograde thinkers, with a passion for knowledge and a desire to limit it, with an irresistible attraction to power and wealth, to freedom and independent governance of cities, with the full range of all possible human qualities.

The book “Stories of Queens and Power” introduces the reader to the way of life and the place of women in a male world, which worships military prowess and courage. Public opinion and laws in the Middle Ages provided for them to be under the care of men in the family – father, husband or sons. In practice, however, the woman is the mistress of the home – responsible for order and food, educating and training the children – and this gives reason for some modern medievalists to allow the existence of a “hidden matriarchy”. The queens at the top of the social pyramid could presumably take care of the “big house,” the kingdom, and in practice that means exercising power. Some of those described in this book do so very successfully, using means according to their circumstances and temperament.

The publication is also equipped with a Dictionary of Unknown Terms and Names.
