VISUAL WORLDS: The Aesthetics and Politics of Affect.

This bilingual collection explores the dynamics of affect and affective connections emerging in diverse visual settings: from the pages of graphic novels or comic books, through photographs and ads in the global media to images in film and theatre. The analyzed examples help us understand how images work, but also how they are perceived by various audiences and what visual affects they trigger, i.e. the affective capacities of visual culture to mobilize and modulate recipients’ desires, imagination, and thinking. How has the nature of visual experience changed at the beginning of the 21st century? How do we watch and respond to YouTube videos, Mexican telenovelas, commercials, videogames and various performances? How useful are artworks in transmitting empathy into political change? Is there such a thing as ‘cosmopolitan affect’?

The answers to these questions are guided by different methodologies as well as cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, yet all twenty contributions demonstrate the strong aesthetic and political potential of affect in today’s image saturated world.
