Author: Acad. Dimitar Angelov
Third Edition
The book introduces us to the history of Byzantium, an empire that lasted for more than a thousand years (from 395 to 1453). It takes us through a series of political, social, ethnic and cultural events that unfolded during the Late Antiquity and the Medieval period.
It reveals the life of a society, which left tangible traces with its perennial presence in the European medieval world. This applies especially to the states and peoples of the Balkan Peninsula, which for centuries were in close contact with Byzantium and lived in the sphere of its strong influence.
The role of the Byzantine Empire for us, the Bulgarians, is undeniable, not only as a powerful foreign and cultural neighbour, but also because of the large number of writings by Byzantine historiographers, which are an important source for the study of our historical development in the medieval period.
The book is supplied with chronological tables on the late Roman and Byzantine emperors, on the Constantinopolitan patriarchs, and on the more important political, military, social, ecclesiastical-religious, and cultural events of the period of the Byzantine Empire’s existence.
