The Gender Frontier in Sam Shepard’ s and Marsha Norman’s Drama is a parallel study of the functions, meaning and representation of gender in the works of two major contemporary American playwrights. The book demonstrates that the rigid scheme of masculinity and femininity as constructed by opposition and exclusion, is no longer valid in the postmodern art of disintegrating identity where any possible framing into dichotomies gets disrupted. Working at the crossroads of poststructuralist and performance theories, the study reveals a more complex and flexible relationship between the two genders, changeable in time and space. Hence the chosen metaphor “gender frontier” – evoking associations with both movements – in spatial and temporal terms, and change – in established ideas of femininity and masculinity.

The book will engage students, theater-makers, and literary specialists who are interested in recent developments in American drama and theater.
