King Louis VII (1120-1180) led his crusaders on the long journey from Metz through the lands of the Hungarians and Bulgarians to Constantinople. From there, passing through many obstacles, misunderstandings with the German king and the Roman basileus, clashes with the local population and with the Turks, crossing difficult mountains and rivers, he reached Antioch, where he found himself in the middle of a great dispute among the European settlers as to where the military effort should be directed, and eventually his campaign suffered a complete military failure.
